Occupational Therapy

Trauma-Informed Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy at FamilyForward provides trauma-specific care that uses the strengths of the child and their caregiving environment to help them fully participate in the meaningful activities of childhood regardless of past experiences of adversity or systemic barriers to success.

We Use Play and Everyday Activities to Create Therapeutic Sessions for Your Child

Our occupational therapy sessions are all about turning everyday activities into intentional learning experiences. we work on important skills like problem-solving, frustration tolerance, and motor coordination through games, cooking activities, and many other fun and functional opportunities.

We Focus on Sensory Regulation and Development

Our occupational therapy providers are experts in sensory regulation and development. Our team works closely with families and caregivers to create calming spaces and routines that help meet children's sensory needs so they can learn and thrive.

We Focus on Building Relationships

During our sessions we often include caregivers, and for children in our therapeutic preschool, we include the teachers. We recognize the crucial role of these caregivers in creating the felt safety and opportunities for practice that children need to successfully engage in activities outside of therapy sessions.

What to Expect

The services provided by FamilyForward's trauma-specific Occupational Therapy team focuses on the impact that developmental trauma plays in shaping the child's response to the environment, their relational health needs, executive functioning, and motor development.

Occupational Therapy services begin with a FamilyForward caregiver interview, an assessment, and a caregiver feedback session. We will discuss everything going on with the child's occupations and work with the caregivers to set goals. We will then make a plan to reach those goals that meets the family's capacity and needs.
