Working with Biological Parents
For many resource families, the prospect of working with a child’s birth family can be intimidating. This class is designed to examine the benefits and realities of working with birth families and to provide tools and ideas to help bridge the gap. The intergenerational nature of trauma, along with special considerations in dealing with kin relationships, will be discussed. Setting boundaries in continued relationships with the birth family, both prior to and following adoption, will also be examined. Sexual Development and Identity
From the National Training and Development Curriculum (NTDC) Right Time Training catalog, this training offers an overview of healthy sexual development and provides guidance on discussing it with children, including aspects of healthy sexual relationships. It delves into the specific needs that children who have experienced trauma, loss, or separation may have in forming a positive and healthy identity concerning their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) and overall sexuality. Additionally, the training will highlight strategies for parents who are fostering or adopting to support their child’s sexual development. It provides descriptions of protective factors, coupled with strategies on how to build upon these factors to support children in developing their identity, self-esteem, and skills for self-advocacy. Crisis Management
Parents will learn what qualifies as a crisis, the signs of escalation in their children and methods to de-escalate the dysregulated child. The development and use of safety plans for the home will be discussed. Police CIT (Crisis Intervention Teams) and protocol for engaging their assistance will be introduced. Preparing For and Managing Visitation
From the catalogue of the National Training and Development Curriculum (NTDC) Right Time Training, this theme provides an overview the importance of children maintaining visits with their family and how to check in and address concerns, questions and emotions children may encounter before and after the visits. The theme provides strategies on how to help children name and validate the range of feelings they may experience before, during and after a visit and understand the role that parents who are fostering or adopting play in these visits. Collaborative & Proactive Solutions
Formerly known as Collaborative Problem Solving, the originator Dr. Ross Greene works under the assumption that children do well if they can. By viewing challenging behavior as a deficit in cognitive skills, specifically the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance and problem solving, parents can view their child through sympathetic eyes. Parents practice the three steps of collaborative problem solving: Empathy Step, Define the Problem Step and Invitation Step.
